January 16, 2025 — As the demand for resources in the world grows, the work of The Stewardship Action Foundation (SAF) is needed now more than ever. SAF has released their 23-24 Annual Report highlighting the successful educational efforts implemented to advance the achievement of a responsible and circular economy. For example, the Stewardship Action Foundation hosted two national webinars, presented as the Keynote at both the Michigan and the New Mexico Recycling Association conferences, and co-hosted the 6th annual California legislative study trip to Colorado and New Mexico. The two webinars covered the first in the nation needle and medication take-back bill in California advanced by our sister organization, the National Stewardship Action Council (NSAC) and the other on Revolutionizing Recycling by highlighting new companies and technologies entering the field. These educational efforts are advancing the knowledge of key stakeholders on how to successfully inch closer to a Circular Economy in the United States.
To expand the work nationally, we welcome two experts to the Board - Mya Keyzers, a Recycling Market Development Specialist at the Washington Department of Ecology, and Erin Rowland, General Superintendent of Operations for Waste Diversion and Recycling in the City of Long Beach.
Mya Keyzers has played a pivotal role at the Washington State Department of Ecology's Recycling Market Development Center (RMDC). She is instrumental in facilitating stakeholder engagement to drive systems change. Over the last three years with the RMDC, she has provided technical assistance to advance domestic markets for glass, paper, agricultural plastics, and textiles through research and identifying market trends. She is also the subject matter expert for providing guidance on Washington's recycling refund legislation and mattress EPR.
Erin Rowland, with nearly 20 years of experience in the solid waste and environmental sectors, currently leads waste diversion and recycling initiatives for the City of Long Beach. As a leader in solid waste management, Erin focuses on enhancing the city’s waste diversion and recycling practices while preparing for significant future events such as the 2028 Olympics. She is dedicated to understanding SAF’s priorities and aims to support policy advocacy that promotes environmental stewardship across both public and private sectors.
"As we welcome new leaders to our Board, I am reminded that the path to a circular economy is paved with collaboration and innovation. Together, we have the power to reshape our economy, reduce waste, and create lasting change that benefits both our communities and the environment. The time for action is now, and I am excited to see what we can achieve together with Mya Keyzers and Erin Rowland to our Board of Directors," said Heidi Sanborn, Executive Director of the Stewardship Action Foundation. "Their expertise, passion, and commitment to a more sustainable future align perfectly with our goals. We look forward to their contributions as we continue to lead the charge for a circular economy."
Mya and Erin will join the existing board members from Texas, New Mexico, the Navajo Nation, and Minnesota in guiding the foundation's strategic initiatives and expanding its impact in educating about the benefits of achieving a circular economy.
The SAF team is proud to continue expanding its influence and impact across the nation as demonstrated in the work outlined in the Annual Report, its growing budget and expanding board. With the world’s resources becoming more in demand and more constrained, the work to ensure products are recycled and not wasted is more important than ever before.
